Abstract
The collection comprises a late-18th century bible owned by Lucinda Coleman, with accompanying provenance documentation and locket wrapping. Lucinda Coleman was born in Sag Harbor, New York between 1763-1771 and died in 1849. During the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), a band of British soldiers invaded the Coleman kitchen, raiding the oven, and stealing loaves of bread. One of the soldiers, David Carseul, gave the young Lucinda Coleman, then 12 years old, a bible in gratitude for a...

Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: A0066
Abstract
This collection primarily comprises letters written by self-taught artist Mary K. Borkowski to Jacqueline Loewe Fowler, former trustee of the American Folk Art Museum (AFAM), in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In her letters, Borkowski updates Fowler on events in her work and life, from the status of the pieces she is working on, to career achievements, to personal challenges. The letters are beautifully candid. Borkowski clearly held Fowler in high esteem, not only as a customer and...

Item — Box: 1
Identifier: A0072
Abstract
This late-nineteenth century copy of Our Living World was owned by artist Morris Hirshfield and used for source images of birds. The book contains scraps of scratch paper, some illustrated by the artist and inserted as bookmarks for pages of interest. In addition to its intrinsic connection to Hirshfield, this book provides critical insight into the artist’s process. As scholar Richard Meyer observes, Hirshfield does not copy the drawings contained in this book, but...

People Files
Collection
Identifier: A0003
Scope and Contents
Like the “Topical Subject” files, the “People” files have two constituent parts, one deriving from materials donated to the library by Dr. Bishop, the other originating in the library and developed by Edith Wise during the last few years [c. 1988]. Both consist of folders devoted to individual persons but, whereas the “Wise” files are concerned wholly with prominent folk artists past and present, the “Bishop” segment is wide-ranging in coverage: a significant portion relates to contemporary...
